Infrared Sauna Dangers

Too much infrared sauna sweating can cause dehydration

An infrared sauna is useful for many reasons. It is a relaxing way to unwind at the end of the day or after exercise. It can also be helpful for weight loss or detoxification. However, there are dangers in the use of infrared saunas that every potential user should be aware of.

“Are Infrared Saunas dangerous?” is a question that mars the credentials of Infrared Saunas. After all, it does give its users the benefit of a rejuvenating and a relaxing experience. If you ask people the biggest benefit of Infrared Sauna baths, they will tell you “It de-stresses me”. This one benefit gets them addicted to infrared sauna baths. It is the addiction to these Sauna Baths that results in some dangerous consequences to its users.

An infrared sauna uses infrared light rays to heat materials such as charcoal, carbon fibers and other materials, which in turn heat the air in the sauna. Infrared saunas are often dry saunas, which mean that they do not produce a large amount of steam. Infrared saunas are popular for home saunas because they do not have surfaces inside the sauna that are hot; this reduces the possibility of burns. The saunas also heat faster than other saunas and cause a higher amount of sweating.

The main danger from an infrared sauna is the danger of sweating to the point of dehydration. This can be very dangerous to someone sitting alone in the sauna. Dehydration can occur in almost anyone, so it is very important to take a buddy into the sauna with you or to ensure that you are taking in as much liquid is as leaving your body through sweat. Too much time spent in a sauna can also produce a mineral deficiency.

Another danger from an infrared sauna is the danger of radiation. If a lot of time is spent inside an infrared sauna–more than one or two hours a day for several months–then there is a potential danger for elevated levels of radiation in the body. If sauna therapy has been recommended for weight loss or detoxing, it is best to use a different form of sauna to protect against radiation poisoning. Infrequent infrared sauna use has no danger for radiation.

Though sauna baths are extremely beneficial to obese people, the dangers of addiction are even more pronounced for obese people. Infrared Saunas cause dilation of skin pores in obese people due to over stretching of skin caused by excessive fats present underneath the skin of obese people.

The moral of the story is saunas can only be dangerous if one is addicted to it. Enough care must also be taken to address the environment in which the bath is taken. All precautionary measures must be taken to ensure that the bath-taker is out of harm’s way at all times. Techniques like taking an infrared sauna bath for some parts of the body while not exposing the whole body to infrared radiations are extremely beneficial and eliminate the dangers of infrared saunas.
